Our Program
Bible:
We use the Bible curriculum from Bob Jones University Press (BJU Press) entitled A Servant's Heart. Second graders learn from Bible stories, Scripture memory, and life application stories about God as our King, being humble, being obedient, forgiveness, being generous, and serving God in our daily lives.
English/Language Arts:
Second graders are reading all the time! For reading, students read various fiction and non-fiction stories from our second grade reader published by BJU Press. These stories incorporate biblical principles while students practice phonics and comprehension skills. We also use Accelerated Reader to provide many reading choices for our students to practice their reading.
Our writing and grammar curriculum from BJU Press focuses on sentence subjects and actions, capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech. We also work through the writing process in our writing workshop to create a personal narrative, book reports, a friendly letter, an imaginary story, and a "how to" narrative.
For penmanship, we use the ABeka curriculum for learning cursive.
Each week students work on spelling words from BJU's Spelling 2 curriculum. The activities presented focus on breaking words apart to learn spelling patterns and learning the meaning of the words and how to use them in writing. They also have the opportunity to practice spelling words through spelling centers.
Mathematics:
The BJU Math 2 curriculum for second grade includes units on: addition and subtraction, 2-digit and 3-digit adding and subtracting with regrouping, money, time, measurement, place value to 1,000, graphing, and two and three dimensional shapes. We also use Rocket Math to help us memorize basic addition and subtraction facts.
Science:
Second grade scientists learn about animals, sight, sound, energy, plants, and weather. We use ACSI's Purposeful Design curriculum and other resources to inquire about the world that God created for us.
Social Studies:
For social studies, our BJU Press curriculum includes units on communities, government, land forms, the first thirteen colonies, events leading up to and including the Revolutionary War, starting a new country, map skills, and continents.
Enrichment Classes:
Students attend weekly chapel, Art, Computers, and Music classes one time per week and P.E. two times per week.
